Assistant Professor in Sustainability and Geographic Information Science

Temple University, Philadelphia PA. Temple University’s Department of Geography and Urban Studies (GUS) invites applications for a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor beginning in academic year 2016-17. A Ph.D. in Geography or related field is required by the start of employment. We are looking for individuals who will excel at conducting research and providing graduate and undergraduate instruction in an interdisciplinary department. GUS ( offers two interdisciplinary undergraduate majors in Geography and Urban Studies and Environmental Studies. GUS also offers three graduate programs – a M.A. and a Ph.D. in Geography and Urban Studies and a Professional Science Masters in Geographic Information Systems.

The successful candidate must have strong research and teaching capabilities in the application of spatial modeling to human-environmental processes. Topical foci that are most desirable include spatial landscape ecology, land change monitoring and modeling, urbanization, human mobility patterns, hazards or disease distribution. The ability to complement one or more of the department’s core research areas in sustainability, social justice, globalization and geographic methods is desirable. The candidate should have complementary expertise in remote sensing, and in one or more of the following: geocomputational modeling, spatial statistics, and advanced techniques in GIS. It is desirable that these methods are applied to addressing the contemporary challenges of global environmental change or urban and environmental sustainability. The successful applicant will demonstrate a strong potential for funded research and the ability to collaborate with colleagues across campus in a broad array of disciplines as well as with the newly implemented SAL@T, Spatial Analysis Laboratory at Temple, which is a university-wide core-facility in health geographics situated in and managed by the Department of Geography and Urban Studies.
